I was given a Christmas gift and letter of explanation by a 3rd grade teacher, in whose room I work. I passed the gift on to a young boy, maybe eight years old, in a Runza restaurant last week.
I had stopped for an ice cream treat, when two youth approached the counter where I was standing. The younger boy, maybe four years old, was with his older brother. The young boy handed the server a free cone coupon and placed his order. When the server asked the older boy what he wanted, he said, “Oh, nothing.” He waited patiently with his younger brother until he’d gotten his cone, and then they went around the corner to sit down.
I went to my car to get the gift I’d received from Liz and came back into the restaurant. I approached the table where the boys sat with their mother. I asked the Mom if I could give something to her older son. She nodded her OK with a questioning look.
I held out my hand with the bill folded up inside. The older boy looked at me for a moment and then held his hand out. I gave him the money, said, “Merry Christmas and I like how you were so sweet with your brother.” Then I walked away, feeling so humble.
Since that day, I have approached several strangers, giving them the same gift. One was in a grocery store, one was at the Salvation Army bell ringer and one was in a thrift store. I like the feeling I have when I walk away. -Wen
